Ilse de Ziah is an Irish-Australian cellist who composes and rearranges cello music. She published several collections of music for unaccompanied solo cello. The rearranged Gabriel’s Oboe is a good example of her work for unaccompanied solo cello. Sheet music for Gabriel’s Oboe can be purchased online as part of the Wedding Music for Solo Cello, a great collection of unaccompanied solo music that allows a single cellist to project powerful music throughout an entire wedding.
The existence of her arrangement is under-appreciated. At the time of this article, there are no other unaccompanied arrangements of Gabriel’s Oboe for solo cello. There are, however, plenty of so-called “solo cello” covers for Gabriel’s Oboe on YouTube. But all of them are really cello-piano duets, other forms of duets, ensembles, or even music with entire orchestra backings. The same can be said of most unaccompanied arrangements from Ilse de Ziah – they have no equals elsewhere.
